Tax expert Wendell Ganhinhin of P&A Grant Thornton shares valuable insights from his 30-year-journey in the industry.

In an era where tax laws and regulations are constantly shifting, Wendell Ganhinhin stands out as a seasoned expert who has dedicated more than three decades to helping businesses navigate the complex world of taxation. As the Tax Advisory and Compliance Practice Leader at P&A Grant Thornton, Ganhinhin's journey from humble beginnings to becoming a key figure in the firm speaks volumes about adaptability and dedication in a field that demands constant vigilance.

Starting his career as an audit staffer in Makati, Ganhinhin eventually found his way to the tax compliance team, where he flourished. Over time, he was unanimously chosen by his peers to lead the firm’s tax advisory and compliance division, proof of his expertise and leadership qualities.

Today, Ganhinhin oversees a team of individual based in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. His role involves balancing revenue and costs, as well as ensuring client compliance. “The tax practice is critical for any company,” Ganhinhin said. “Non-compliance with tax regulations can lead to hefty penalties and interest, which could directly affect a company’s bottom line.”

A deep love for his work has fueled Ganhinhin’s 30-year career in tax advisory. “I love what I do,” he said. “There’s fulfillment in helping companies comply with tax regulations, knowing that, in a way, we’re contributing to the growth of the economy.” This passion drives him and his team to stay ahead of tax law changes and implement proactive measures that help their clients.

One of the most significant challenges Ganhinhin faces is the dynamic nature of tax regulations. “Tax laws are always changing, and if you’re not updated, non-compliance is almost inevitable,” he says. To combat this, Wendell’s team regularly hosts webinars, seminars, and training sessions to ensure that both clients and internal staff are always informed of the lates developments.

Beyond compliance, P&A Grant Thornton and its tax partners like Wendell also play an active role in shaping tax policies in two different fronts as representative of P&A and as representative of different organization during public and legislative hearings. AS Vice President of Cebu Chamber of Commerce & Industry (CCCI) and Vice Chair of the Taxation Committee under the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), he and his team submit position papers and contribute to legislative deliberations. “We’re consulted by the BIR and Congress to provide insights on pending tax bills,” he said, underscoring the collaborative relationship the firm has built with key government agencies.

As Ganhinhin looks ahead, he sees major trends on the horizon that will reshape the tax landscape. One such trend is the Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS) Pillar 2, which aims to impose a 15% global minimum tax to large multinational companies. He believes this could impact the country’s ability to attract big foreign investors, as the government will need to adapt its tax incentive structures to remain competitive.

Another hot topic is the proposed taxation on digital services, which he sees as having a direct impact on local businesses as well as ordinary citizens.

Through all of this, Ganhinhin is most proud of how P&A Grant Thornton positions itself not just as a compliance partner, but as an advocate for businesses big and small. “As a big firm, we naturally attract multinational and large domestic companies,” he said. “Their compliance requirements are sophisticated, and they come to us because we have the resources, manpower, and experience to handle those needs. But our services are also available to smaller businesses, and we are proud to assist them as well. We are providing free mentoring services and free seminars to MSMEs.”

His vision for the firm isn’t limited to the local market either. Wendell believes that P&A Grant Thornton’s team possesses the global competencies needed to succeed internationally.

At the core of Ganhinhin's philosophy is the idea that taxation is vital to nation-building. “Taxation is the lifeblood of our country,” he said. “Without taxes, we cannot fund essential services or pay our government workers.”

Ganhinhin’s leadership at P&A Grant Thornton highlights the importance of collaboration, both within the firm and with external stakeholders. He encourages his team to engage not only in the technical work but also to get involved with professional organizations such as Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants, PCCI, CCCI and others, which broadens their skills and perspective.

Ganhinhin’s proactive approach to taxation also involves open communication with the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR). “The BIR is very open to feedback from the private and professional sectors,” he said, pointing to the partnership with the agency through different professional and business organizations in crafting practical solutions to complex tax issues.

Looking forward, Ganhinhin is confident that as long as businesses continue to face the challenges of compliance, firms like P&A Grant Thornton will remain essential partners in helping them succeed. Ganhinhin’s journey offers valuable insights into what it takes to succeed in the world of taxation---a blend of passion, adaptability, and a commitment to nation-building. By staying ahead of industry trends and maintaining focus on collaboration, Ganhinhin has helped position P&A Grant Thornton as a trusted advisor for companies navigating the complexities of tax compliance.
