Sparking Joy in the First Hello: Jenny’s Journey of Giving Warm Welcomes

I’ve been with P&A Grant Thornton for 27 years, and my journey has been nothing short of fulfilling. During my stay at the Firm, I have moved through different roles from being a secretary, to billing and collection specialist, and now as the Firm’s frontliner and petty cash custodian. Needless to say, each role has taught me something new and turned me into the professional I am today.

When I landed the role as a receptionist, I was nervous about it at first. I wasn’t sure if I could handle the demands of being the first face people see when they enter the Firm’s office. But over time, I found my rhythm. I’ve learned that a warm smile, a kind greeting, and a little patience can go a long way in making clients, partners, job candidates, and visitors feel comfortable and valued. First impressions matter, and what I show affects the Firm’s impression too. I want to make sure everyone who walks through our doors feels welcome just like how I envision the Firm welcomes everyone.

One thing P&Aers often recognise about me is my habit of greeting everyone in English. I believe communication is key, and as professionals, we should be able to express ourselves clearly and confidently. It’s a small but important way to show that our Firm’s employees are adaptable and able to discuss and create meaningful conversations with our diverse clients and visitors.

Of course, my journey hasn’t always been easy. One of the challenges that I’ve faced is balancing motherhood and career. Both require patience, dedication, and the ability to juggle work and life at home. However, despite being by myself at the front desk, I know I’m not alone. I’m grateful for the support I’ve received from P&A Grant Thornton, especially through the coaching and mentoring program which gave me space to discuss challenges and opportunities in my personal and professional life.

If there’s one message I’d share with young women starting as receptionists, it’s this: “Collaborate, don’t compete.” Every role is a step to something greater as long as you focus on yourself. I don’t know what could be  the next chapter of my journey, but for now, I take pride in being the first smile people see when they enter our office because I know that a warm welcome can make all the difference.
